1. What is PsychoGenetic Testing?
PsychoGenetic testing (also called pharmacogenetic testing) is a tool that helps your provider understand how your genes may influence the way your body responds to psychiatric medications. It is not a stand-alone diagnostic tool—an initial psychiatric evaluation is always required first.
2. What conditions can this test help with?
The insights from psychoGenetic testing can help guide treatment decisions for:
- Depression
- Anxiety disorders
- Bipolar disorder
- ADHD
- PTSD
- Other mental health conditions where medication may be part of the treatment plan
3. Is this test required for everyone?
No. Your provider will determine whether genetic testing is appropriate after reviewing your symptoms, medical history, and previous medication experiences. Many patients respond well to treatment without genetic testing.
4. Can I still try medication without PsychoGenetic Testing?
Yes. PsychoGenetic testing is an optional tool to support treatment planning. Your provider can prescribe effective medications without it, based on clinical expertise, your history, and current best practices.
5. Which test do we use?
At Mindsense Serenity, we use the GeneSight® Psychotropic Test. This test analyzes how your genetic makeup may impact your response to commonly prescribed psychiatric medications. It provides your provider with personalized guidance, such as:
- Which medications may be more effective for you
- Which may require dosage adjustments
- Which may be less effective or have a higher risk of side effects
6. Is the GeneSight® test right for you?
You may benefit from this test if:
- A medication has failed to work for you in the past
- Your current medication is not providing enough relief
- You are experiencing bothersome side effects from your medication.
7. What is the GeneSight® testing process?
- Step 1: A simple cheek swab is collected in the office.
- Step 2: Your sample is sent to the GeneSight® lab for analysis. Results are usually available in about two business days.
- Step 3: Your provider reviews the results with you and integrates them into your treatment plan.
8. How much does the GeneSight® test cost?
Coverage varies by insurance plan. Many insurance providers, including Medicare, cover all or part of the cost of testing. Your provider’s office can help you verify coverage and out-of-pocket expenses before testing.
